There are many lessons we should be learning from this show. Number one is the unstoppable optimism of Leslie Knope. It doesn’t really matter how many obstacles are placed in her way; she keeps moving forward. Never quits, not even when the somewhat predictable complications of having such a job keep her from actually doing the work. I admire her unbreakable manner and, of course, her unmatched humor. We love her because she really cares, and caring is the most important thing you can do; everything else will fall into place eventually.
I must admit I have not followed Leslie Knope’s advice all the time. I do get discouraged at work when things are not going the way I expected them to go, and when my efforts seem to fall short. It’s part of life; it happens. Things don’t go the way you thought they would, and your confidence takes a hit. That said, whenever I need a little pick-me-up and a friendly reminder that I am, in fact, awesome, I go back to the Parks and Recreation universe to enjoy some very unexpected, yet hilarious, scenarios. Let’s call it a “treat yo’self” rewatch.

Other characters bring very valuable lessons to the table as well. Ann Perkins teaches us how to be great friends while looking amazing all the time. Ron’s outlook on life makes us realise that we don’t have to take things too seriously, and April’s dark thoughts help us appease the monsters we carry inside before our morning coffee. Even Andy, who teaches us to…I don’t really know what on earth he teaches us, but he is a comedic mastermind indeed.

Between bizarre business ideas, completely unhinged life philosophies, excessive bureaucracy, endless meetings, and bottomless passion for an impossible job, Parks and Recreation is a beautiful letter of appreciation for all of us who do our best, despite it not always showing. Hang in there, my friends; I believe in you just as much as Leslie Knope believes in Pawnee.
